Volunteers

An easy way to volunteer is to run for the Precinct Committeeman or Committeewoman.  It isn’t a truly act of volunteering as you are elected.  In Sedgwick County there are many unfilled seats.  If your precinct already has a Committee Person get a hold of them and offer to help. To run for this Office an Declaration of Intention must be filed with the County Election Office.  The form is available online at https://www.sedgwickcounty.org/media/26318/precinct-committeeman-and-committeewoman.pdf  The form must be signed and notarized.  There is a Notary at the Sedgwick County Election Office so the process is seamless.  The election is held during the Primary Election and the filing deadline is June 1st 2026 with the Election being held August 2, 2026.    I was given a form that is used by Johnson County Kansas which gives a great explanation of the position.  This is truly a grassroots position that can have a huge impact on local elections.

Johnson County Republican Party (its their form - the position and description is the same)

What is a Precinct Committee Leader?

The Precinct Committee Leader is the Only Party Official that is Directly elected by the Republican Voters.

Our precinct leader represents the Republican Party to the people of their precinct.  You are the primary contact between voters, candidates, and elected officials.

There are about 5000 precincts in Kansas ranging from 3 precincts in some counties to over 500 precincts in the largest counties.  Precincts have no set population, ranging from zero to 2600 voters.  Each precinct is authorized to have one Precinct Committeeman and one Precinct Committeewoman for each official party.

What are the responsibilities of a Precinct Committee Leader?

Official: Precinct leaders have one official duty: if a vacancy occurs in a partisan elected office, the Precinct leaders from that district meet to elect the replacement.

Party:

·         Precinct leaders meet in county conventions in the fall of an even election year and elect county party officers and county delegates to Congressional District conventions.

·         In primary elections, precinct leaders are free to support or endorse any party candidate.

·         In general elections, precinct leaders help Republican Candidates in their precinctand help get out the vote.

Basic Party Tasks:

1.      Recruit Volunteers:  Politics is a volunteer job.  Find people who are interested and want to help and get them involved.

2.      Register Voters: Know how to help someone register to vote: either an 18 year old registering for the first time, someone new to the precinct, or someone who wants to change their party affiliation to Republican.

3.      Assist Candidates: Find Volunteers to get involved with events (parades, phone banks, help with mail)or walk with the candidate.

4.      Walk Precinct: Use voter lists to distribute election information and candidate literature in your precinct.  The party can create lists of all voters in your precinct in the order that the houses appear on the street or based upon criteria such as age voting frequency ect.

5.      Absentee or Early Ballot: About 35% of voters vote before election day, either by mail or in person.  Help voters learn about advance voting.  Use lists provided by the party or by candidates to call people who request advance mail ballots and remind them to vote.  The party and candidates gets daily lists of who voted early and who have mail ballots at home.
